CRH’s global scale allows the company to play an important role in the field of sustainability. Community engagement is one area that CRH has highlighted as a key factor for our ongoing efforts to address sustainability across four topics: safety, environment, people, and products. Providing employees and local community members with the opportunity to collaborate can open doors to future involvement and contribute to thriving and inclusive communities. In 2020, CRH donated $8.3 million to local community organizations to help in education, equal housing, and inclusion programs. Throughout 2021, CRH is looking to continue initiating these community engagement opportunities to help maximize their positive impact.
In the Northwest region, various projects are underway to help CRH meet these goals. This month, RiverBend Materials participated in a trash clean-up project near the Hilroy site in Salem, Oregon. Roughly 30 employees spent nearly three hours collecting just under 700 lbs. of waste.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates a whopping 292.4 million tons of waste was generated in 2018. Much of that ends up either in landfills or spread throughout community areas. Accumulated waste can lead to negative effects on the environment, wildlife, and humans. This is just one of the many examples where local operating companies take steps to better their community and contribute to CRH’s overall sustainability goals.
