EUGENE, Ore. — For RiverBend Materials, it’s business as usual, even during the pandemic. The company supplies concrete and asphalt for construction and says it’s seeing the same amount of business.

KC Klosterman, the Director of Government and Community Relations, said that social distancing has been taking place since late February.

With less traffic on the roads, the company has been able to safely pave and get the necessary jobs done.

“We want the public to know that we care about them, and we’re going to practice safe things,” Klosterman said. “We have decals on our trucks, for example, that say to stay back six feet. If we’re delivering concrete to a job, it tells the concrete finisher to stay away from the truck.”

Klosterman said the most difficult recruitment has been for drivers.

RiverBend Materials does have an apprenticeship program, but it is currently on hold due to the pandemic because an apprentice cannot be in the same car as a driver.

The company is looking forward to relaunching the program when it is safe to do so.

Klosterman said that every person who previously worked in an office, with the exception of the front desk assistant, is working from home. Those working out of the office are expected and trained to follow the appropriate social distancing procedures.

“I just want people to be hopeful that this will end soon,” Klosterman said. “The same way that we’re coaching our people to be safe at work — I hope people are practicing that at home too.”
